Dynamic technological solutions create new possibilities that serve the person rather than the disease. Solutions need the clinical validation and implementation practice to make them scalable. The potential of open innovation and testing in the healthcare institutions is currently underdeveloped and underused.
The event brings together key stakeholders providing a forum for discussion about the challenges in open innovation and collaboration. We share approaches to clinical validation, evidence-based implementation as well as lessons learned from real-world testing of scalable digital solutions.

Fred Kjellson
Fred is an innovation manager with 20 years of experience from the medical device field in research and development all the way to marketing, as researcher, product manager and CEO of a medical device start-up company. He is now focusing on bridging the public healthcare with innovative companies for developing new solutions, often in a cross-border, cross-organization, multi-helix approach, using testbeds or Living Labs as gateways, but also participating in public innovation procurements for successful demand driven innovation. He is part of Innovation Skåne, which is the Region Skåne’s fully owned innovation company.
Teemu Santonen
Dr. Santonen received his Ph.D. (Econ.) degree in Information Systems Science from Aalto University in Finland in 2005 and has over twenty years of experience in the field of innovation. Since 2006 he has been acting as a knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) principal lecturer at the Laurea UAS while leading numerous national and international innovation and research projects. Santonen has been a member of the International Society of Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM) Scientific Panel over 10 years, and is former board member of Finnish Strategic Management Society. The Finnish Inventor Support Association have honored Santonen’s novel crowdsourcing based open innovation pedagogy approach as the best school related innovation in Finland. As of today he has publish over 60 scientific publications. Prior his academic career Santonen was working over a decade as a consult and a development manager in leading Finnish financial, media and ICT sector organizations.
Katri-Liis Lepik
Katri-Liis Lepik is Associate Professor of Management at Tallinn University, Estonia and Visiting Fellow at Northumbria University, UK. She is a lecturer, mentor and council member in the Master’s programme of Social Entrepreneurship at Tallinn University and a social entrepreneur herself. Katri-Liis is a researcher of living labs in the project “Product Validation in Health” and Horizon 2020 project “Co-creation of service innovation in Europe”. She is the Chair of the COST network project “Multi-disciplinary innovation for social change”. She is a founder of Brainport Living Lab LLC implementing national and international innovation projects since 2003. She is also an evaluation expert for Horizon 2020 and Erasmus calls in the fields of SMEs, higher education and innovation.
Her presentation will be about the tool helping the living labs to analyse their development and helping to improve their services.

Jens Strandbech
Jens Dinesen Strandbech received his Master in Information Architecture and Persuasive. Design from Aalborg University in 2012 and his Ph.D.-degree in 2018 after researching humanoid robotics in healthcare. Jens has several years of experience at the intersection of research and innovation within healthcare. His research interests peak in the fields of Human-Robot-Interaction, Health- and Welfare technology and technological implementation.
He is currently a Project Manager at the Health Innovation Centre of Southern Denmark, focusing on the application of robotics in healthcare as well as open innovation methods for researching, developing and implementing Health- and Welfare- technology in general. In addition, Jens is involved in scoping new ideas and establishing both national and international partnerships and collaborations.
Beata Krawczyk
Project manager in the Consulting, Training and Marketing Department, GAPR Ltd.
Beata Krawczyk has graduated in environmental engineering in The Silesian University of Technology and worked over 4 years on European projects dedicated to environmental and water protection. Acquiring relevant experience in project implementation, she is now a manager in projects related to the cooperation of enterprises with scientific and research units in the field of health care. Focuses on giving input for policy making to achieve lasting effect of the recommendations developed in the project.
Esther Davidsen
Esther Davidsen has been working on EU projects within the field of health innovation over the last 10 years. She has lived and worked in Brussels for 25 years, where she has served both in the private and public sector as a high level policy analyst and advisor. She is now back in her native Denmark where she works as an expert on EU projects within the field of health innovation and runs the user driven platform for assistive technologies with user ratings www.guiden65.dk. Esther holds degrees in political Sciences from Denmark, France and Belgium and an MBA from the UK.

Ana Duarte
Ana DUARTE is currently a Policy and Programme Officer at the DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission, working in the unit dedicated to health innovations, more specifically in the team dealing with health & care systems transformation. Before joining the commission, Ana worked in the health sector in humanitarian and development contexts.

Terje Peetso
Dr Terje Peetso is a member of the management board in the North Estonia Medical Centre in Tallinn. Among ohter tasks she is responsible for the coordination of research and innovation activities in the hospital and cooperation with other hospitals and clinical partners in Estonia and abroad.
Dr Peetso worked from 2003 – 2018 in the European Commission on digital health, tobacco control and risk assessment. Before joining the North Estonia Medical Centre, Peetso was the Head of Sector on eHealth and Ageing Policy in the European Commission`s DG CONNECT In 2014 she was the EU Fellow in the University of Southern California, USA, where her research focus was on the obstacles which hinder the introduction eHealth in healthcare systems.
Dr Peetso holds a diploma in medicine from the University of Tartu, Estonia

Passionate developer of innovation ecosystems with over 20 years of extensive background in a variety of executive and expert roles in business development and research organizations. Ahmed is a public health professional with 15 years of national, regional and international experience in professional areas of reproductive health, organizational management , global health diplomacy and innovation for development , and has spent the last 12 years with the United Nations system. He has an aptitude to solving organizational problems, mobilizing resources and advocating for and fostering new partnerships effectively. Ahmed currently leads the Health theme at the United Nations Technology Innovation Lab based in Finland.

Bent-Haakon Lauritzen is senior advisor and program manager in the largest health tech cluster in Norway, Norway Health Tech. His main area of focus is supporting companies getting introduced to the health care and advising hospitals and primary care testing, procuring and implementing new technology. Bent-Haakon Lauritzen is responsible for managing Nordic Proof – a partnership between several Nordic hospitals building professional services for developing and testing of industry solutions in clinic.
Jagadeesh Gandla
Dr. Jagadeesh Gandla works as an accelerator programme manager at EIT Health, he is currently based in Munich, Germany. He is originally from India, obtained a PhD in ’Cancer Pain’ from University of Heidelberg, Germany. At EIT Health he is in the incharge of two programmes called ’Mentoring and Coaching Network’ and Living labs & test beds’. As a part of his job, he supports hundreds of healthcare start-ups to validate their products by providing access to high quality mentors or Living labs.

Living labs and test beds are an important stake holder elements that provides access to end users. In the ’living labs and test beds programme’ of EIT Health we are buiding an unique European network of healthcare living labs. In the presentation, we will show a short glimpse of our network and also the process and success cases of supporting start-ups to validate, ideate or co-create their products with the help of living labs.
